  • August 8, 2018

    AFFOA’s own Michael Rein published his findings and research in Nature surrounding semiconductor communication in fibers. This research contributes to AFFOA’s mission and credits AFFOA employees, MIT graduate students and staff, and industry members.

  • July 12, 2018

    With support from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and three Manufacturing USA Institutes as contributors, UMass Lowell opened the Fabric Discovery Center (FDC) in July 2018.

  • June 13 & 14, 2018

    AFFOA hosted the 2018 Members Only Workshop on June 13-14. This event provided members with an opportunity to connect with others in the greater network, learn more about our enabling technologies and define paths to participate in AFFOA’s engagement opportunities.

  • June 11-15, 2018

    Built for undergraduate students, AFFOA partnered with MIT and FIT on a program facilitating the intersection of design and engineering for products made of advanced functional fibers, yarns and textiles. Students spent one week in Cambridge (June 11-15) and one week in New York City (NYC) (June 18-22).

    AFFOA announced a new MicroAward pilot program designed to engage member organizations in prototyping projects. These projects will support rapid iteration in product design and development, AFFOA roadmap execution, manufacturing readiness and scale, and development of educational tools and the workforce.

    Drexel University, in collaboration with AFFOA is establishing a statewide center that will help companies, entrepreneurs and innovators take their advanced-textile concepts from prototype to product and prepare America’s workforce for the quality jobs this growing sector is generating.

    At the Defense Fabric Discovery Center (DFDC), engineers develop advanced fiber technologies for a range of national security applications. The facility houses state-of-the-art equipment for functional fiber and fabric design, fiber device drawing, textile production, and system integration.
