Executive Summary:

Today’s smart and high- performance clothing aims to introduce new functionality to garments, but traditionally relies on device-heavy solutions that require electronic components and complex mechanisms for sensing and actuation. We offer a radically different approach that instead relies on the inherent physical properties of fiber materials. By using specially-designed bicomponent fibers and full-garment knitting, we can produce climate-adaptive garments with true material-based intelligence. With this simple yet powerful technology, we can create smart garments that adapt to the user’s body temperature to increase performance and breathability, through tunable compression and porosity. Our initial focus will be on fabricating temperature-adaptive garments targeting the smart clothing, athleisure, or performance apparel markets, but the underlying technology can be expanded to encompass additional far-reaching applications. This combination of material technology, digital knit capabilities and functional design promises a scalable and elegant solution for the intelligent textiles of the future.
